The Hospital for Special Surgery, the best orthopedic hospital in the country, is expected to open its first Florida clinic in West Palm Beach next January.
The New York Special Surgery Hospital is close to completing construction of a facility in West Palm Beach, an initiative that will bring top doctors to Florida patients struggling with orthopedic health issues.
The 60,000-square-foot center, located at 300 Palm Beach Lakes Boulevard, is slated to open in late January, said Justin Oppenheimer, senior vice president and chief strategy officer at HSS.
Appointments have already been made for the establishment’s five full-time and three part-time physicians. More physicians are expected to be added as services grow over time.

The center will also open with a staff of 30 to 50 people initially, including radiologists, technicians and physiotherapists. HSS will even have a specialized hand therapist.
More than 500 people gathered earlier this year in Palm Beach to hear HSS medics talk about hips, back, shoulders, elbows, hands and knees. The surprisingly large crowd makes West Palm Beach HSS likely to be busy from the get-go.
Why is HSS so important to Palm Beach County?
For the past 10 years, HSS has been named the nation’s # 1 orthopedic hospital by US News and World Report. Founded in 1863, the Hospital for Special Surgery is also the oldest orthopedic hospital in the United States.

HSS officials have been looking for ways to bring their historic medical services to Florida’s growing, aging, and affluent community for some time. “We want to provide care closer to where people live and work and not just in Westchester County, New York. It means Florida,” HSS Chairman Louis Shapiro told the Palm Beach Post. Last year.
Today’s retirees are not yesterday’s retirees. Older patients today expect to be able to continue with their active lifestyle, including playing golf or tennis, which allows SSS doctors to keep them moving and out of pain.
Additionally, HSS seeks to attract elite athletes and professional dancers in need of musculoskeletal care. Dr. Kathleen Davenport, an HSS-trained physiatrist who specializes in treating professional dancers in South Florida, is a prominent new recruit. “I hope we will establish relationships with dance companies,” Oppenheimer said.

Ultimately, HSS hopes to be a destination center for all sports medicine needs in the Southeastern United States, including professional athletes as well as adolescent athletes, Oppenheimer said. In the tri-state area of New York, New Jersey and Connecticut, HSS treats more professional athletes than anywhere else in the world, he said.
In January 2018, HSS announced its expansion to Florida in partnership with Tenet Healthcare, parent company of Good Samaritan Medical Center.
Through a subsidiary of Tenet, United Surgical Partnership International, plans are to offer clinical care and other elements of orthopedic care, including diagnostic services such as imaging, rehabilitation and sports medicine.
At the West Palm Beach facility, outpatient surgery will be available. This includes hip and knee replacements for patients, if they are deemed suitable for the outpatient procedure, Oppenheimer said.
Spine surgeries will not be treated at the facility, but non-surgical treatments, such as physiotherapy, will be available. In addition, consultations with HSS doctors in New York, using shared technology from West Palm Beach imaging equipment, will be offered.
Complex orthopedic surgeries requiring hospitalization will be referred to New York.
However, orthopedic trauma care will be offered in Palm Beach County through a new affiliation with Wellington orthopedic surgeon Dr Nicholas Sama, who completed his orthopedic trauma and reconstruction fellowship at HSS in New York.
Oppenheimer said Sama will perform surgeries at Wellington Regional Medical Center and Good Sam.
HSS is not alone in establishing a strong presence in Palm Beach County to tag new patients.
In fact, the county is popular with hospital businesses looking to expand. The population is self-assured and generous, often rewarding medical centers with financial donations that support research, clinical and educational programs.
Cleveland Clinic is a major out-of-zone player, with offices throughout Palm Beach County, including a large medical practice in the CityPlace Tower office building in West Palm Beach.
Despite the prominent presence in West Palm Beach, the Cleveland Clinic continues to expand throughout the county, with offices in Wellington and Palm Beach Gardens.
And earlier this year, the Cleveland Clinic Florida bought 35 acres of land on Lake Worth Road for $ 9.3 million. The Ohio-based hospital company has obtained county approval to build a medical office and may one day build a hospital on the site.
Currently, the closest Cleveland Clinic Hospital to Palm Beach County is at the Florida clinic headquarters in Weston, a long drive for Palm Beach County patients who are referred to the hospital for. treatment or surgery in a hospital setting.
In addition, NYU Langone and New York’s Mount Sinai Hospital have opened medical offices in West Palm Beach.
